For small cameras, this one definitely kicks some Nikon butt. Excellent, sharp pictures, especially for close ups. It’s small enough to fit in my coat pocket, so I carry it everywhere. I especially love how it interfaces with my smartphone. Take a picture and immediately send it to the phone to share with others. I absolutely love this little gem. Attached are photos I took with it.

At first I purchased the Nikon A900. Poor choice. This camera suits my needs. And very easy to transfer photos to all my Apple devices.

I wanted a relatively simple point and shoot camera that would easily travel. I didn’t want the bulk of a 35mm and I definitely wanted something more robust and versatile than an iPhone. This camera is robust, full of features and can be manipulated (programmed) or configured for “Auto” for simple click and go. The zoom is incredible. The attached picture of the moon was taken at 128X digital zoon; note the detail in the craters. I also took this to Yosemite and was able to get some nice shots of Half Dome. And, truth be told, it dropped a couple of times and there are no external scratches, nor did it affect the quality or ease of shooting This camera is a gem and I highly recommend it!!I wanted to amend this review. I was traveling (through Chile and Easter Island) and unfortunately, lost my camera along the way. I had taken a number of unbelievably clear and gorgeous shots of the big heads on Easter Island at sunrise. Anyway, my friends were over the top impressed with the quality of shots. When I returned home, the first thing I did was to order a replacement camera. I was sad to lose the first one, but loved it so much that I didn’t think twice about replacing it. The second one is equally great and I still highly recommend it!

The Good:-40x zoom-Great pictures-Autofocus works well-Sturdy metal design-Has selfie mode so you can flip the screen-Bright flash-Good quality video-Good value-Compact and portable-Good iOS app for connecting to camera-Easy to useThe Bad:-NoneThe Bottom Line:I just took this camera to Alaska (pics of glaciers in photos) and it worked great. We were on a cruise so I wanted something with more zoom than my iPhone 8 Plus. I would have brought my SLR but I haven’t been bringing the SLR as much on trips since it’s bulky. This SX740 is small and lightweight enough to put in my pocket. As for the pictures, they turned out great as the auto focus and zoom worked well. The camera took good videos also. It has a selfie mode so you can flip the screen up so you can see the pics you’re taking. You can also connect the camera through the Canon Connect iOS app. I connected to the camera easily and downloaded certain pics I wanted to send immediately. Overall I would recommend this Canon SX740 to complement your camera phone in your travels!

This camera has surprised me in how good the Zoom works. I had another brand that was so confusing to use that i returns it and purchased this one. So far it has surpassed what i even expected in the quality of the camera and it’s photos. I take most photos of Deer,Eagles and other wildlife. This will be an excellent addition to my cameras for that purpose.

If you are looking for a small pocket camera that does it ALL , 4K + 960mm ( 35 Equivalent ) Zoom. Then your search is positively over and if you want all this has to offer for less than $400 , this camera is for anyone !!It is not only a solidly built camera , but oh that lens . You have to wonder where it all came from !!Once extended to it`s fullest , you truly have to wonder from where.Once into the ‘digital zoom’ you will NEED a tripod , you can`t get clear shots at 960mm with holding the camera. It has all the manual settings you could want and still remains true to it`s ‘point & shoot’ roots. The tilting screen feels solid when flipped and when folded back feels solid as well. The ‘onboard ‘ mic`s are very good within 8 feet or less inside and at arms length while in the field.I find them more than adequate for my needs and I think you will too.No ‘touch – screen’ for me is a plus , this is a camera , not a cell phone !! All functions can easily be accessed via thumb wheel at the back and switching from one screen menu to another via the zoom control. So all and all , I can not understand why the need for a touch screen. The Canon Connect App , makes the camera worth the price of admission !!You can place the camera on a tripod and remote control ALL camera functions including zoom using the app that is available for IOS & Android . The same app allows for transfer to tablet or cell.Sadly if you are wondering where the Bluetooth is , well , it is supposed to be there but I have yet find a way to use it.Still not a deal – breaker considering the remote capabilities of the camera when connected to the app.I find the easiest way to transfer my videos and pictures is to simply remove the card and pop it into a reader or computer. It will show up on your desktop or drive menu and can easily transfer any or all to what ever folder or other drive you wish.So what color ?? For me it was a no – brainer to get the Silver with Tan accents , total class all the way. Think different , not all cameras need to be black !!So how do I rate this point & shoot marvel ? 4.5 Stars , why not 5 ?? because of the 1/2” sensor.Although combined with the Digic 8 processor , it does a fairly good full size sensor likeness .It`s ability for ‘low light’ shooting and movie is evident Canon did something right. All in all a buy now suggestion !I hope I have helped , Gary — aka Dreamer

Wanted a nice point and shoot to take bird photos and for backpacking! Really jazzed with the 40x optical zoom! Bought a sweet leather case to go with it and I’m good to go! So far – so good! 🙂

I used to do professional sports photography so I have a very high end Canon DSLR and several (mostly telephoto) lenses, but that setup just isn’t all that useful for everyday walking around due to size and weight. I also try to avoid using it in situations where it might get damaged such as fishing in saltwater with a small boat. This, on the other hand, is pocket sized, easy to use, has a great zoom range for it’s size, shoots really terrific video in decent light, and is inexpensive enough that if it gets damaged it won’t break my heart. The auto focus is good, but I find a bit better clarity with center focus. I’ve given it a good shakedown with both with still photos and video, and am pleasantly surprised by the video quality (except in really low light). As Canon users already know their smartphone app is unintuitive and clunky, but it does work okay once you get the hang of it. All-in-all it’s vastly superior to a cell phone camera and nearly as convenient. I’m glad I got it.

I’ve previously have used a Nikon F4, Nikon D100, and a Nikon D200 ( to replace a stolen D100,a broken Canon SD100 that accidentally fell into the toilet, and a dropped Nikon S7000 and so, got the Canon SX740 HS as an early 2018 Christmas present WITH the extended warranty/insurance and just recently took it with me on a trip to Kauai and loved using it! The 40X Super Zoom equivalent of a 24-900mm 35mm zoom lens was GREAT! The camera itself was easy to use! It is nicely balanced. I think the 20.3 Megapixel sensor resulted in great pictures. I’ve been keeping on the Auto Mode for now and haven’t need to use the other manual settings yet! I even had a stroke and my left side is paralyzed, so it was even easy balanced and light enough for me to use with just my right hand! I would get this again and highly recommend it to everyone!! Personally, I think the User Manual could have been more informative, but overall is very easy to use and scrolling through the menu to look at all the settings was easy enough!

I learned about 95% of the settings and actually it’s a good pocket camera. I didn’t have any problems connecting WiFi to my iPhone8+. As to the 4k videos, you cannot transfer them to your iPhone, even if it’s 4k. Maybe they will fix that with a firmware update. My newer big screen non-4k 3d HDTV plays the HD videos just fine from the SDXC card, but not the 4k videos. (I thought 4k played on everything but just in standard HD). The 16:9 photos in 1920×1080 are very good. The zoom is a big plus, but turn off the 2x DIGITAL zoom. It will degrade your shots. (Does that mean 40x x 2x= 160x)? You won’t likely need it with this camera’s 40x OPTICAL zoom. You might need & use it sometime, but try to use a tripod for those long shots. Here’s a trick if you don’t have your tripod with you: Just find a stationary object and hand-hold your camera up against the tree, building, car, etc. it will vastly reduce camera shake. It’s easier with a nice view panel like this camera has. Well, that’s about it. Learn the settings and have fun!
