10 reviews for WD 2TB External Hard Drive

  1. GoGirlGo

I received this product yesterday and am very impressed with it. The outward appearance of sleek silver matches my new iMac perfectly. In fact, my smartalecy (ok, there’s no such word) husband put an apple sticker on it, and it actually looks like an apple product. Very easy to hookup with a power AC cord and a USB cord. I plugged it in, and iMac immediately asked me if I wanted to use it for backup, which I did. It utilized USB 3.0 which is super fast, and I have a huge amount of files to back up, which it did nicely.2 Terabytes is plenty of space. I agree with another reviewer that this is indeed a great backup drive for Mac users. Quiet and Fast, you can’t go wrong. My only issue is it’s a bit pricey and it would be nice to see the price come down somewhat.

10/14/13: I purchased the 2TB version of this drive over 6 months ago. I use it as a Time Machine backup drive for a late 2012 iMac. So far, it’s been flawless. It’s very quiet, and fast. When I looked for different drives I was very cognizant of failure rates, and Western Digital drives were not immune from bad reviews. This specific drive seemed to have a lower reported failure rate than others at the storage capacity of 2TB, which is what I was looking for. It was also significantly less expensive than other options I was considering, allowing me to invest in redundancy – as I’m considering getting a second backup drive, and then relegate one of them for keeping cloned copies of my iMac’s HD. I’ll try to update this review on a regular basis, and definitely update if the drive develops any issues.+++++07/05/14: Over eight more months have passed and I recently updated OS X from Mountain Lion 10.8.5 to Mavericks 10.9.3. Some people have reported issues with this drive when updating to Mavericks so I carefully followed these recommended steps: Before updating I unselected the drive from Time Machine and disconnected the drive from my iMac. I also checked it in disk utility prior to the update. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, I have never installed any Western Digital software on my Mac, for this drive or any other. The end result: after the update to Mavericks the drive continues to perform as before, and with no detectable problems.+++++11/02/15: It’s been over 2 1/2 years since I purchase the unit. I’m currently using it with OSX Yosemite on my iMac, still as a Time Machine drive and it continues to give me zero problems. Works flawlessly.+++++8/6/19: It’s been over 6 years since I purchased this product and it is still completely functional. Of course your mileage may vary, as I purchased this product in 2013 and manufacturers sometimes farm out their products to different factories. This particular unit though has been a winner for me.

I’m using this hard drive with my Airport Extreme as a way to stream my movies, tv shows, etc., to my Apple TVs. It works great for that, has ample storage, hooked up quickly and easily, and I’ve had very few problems. I have it hooked up to the one USB port on the Airport through an unpowered USB hub that also connects another external hard drive. Really the only difficulty is that it occasionally disconnects itself and I have to reboot it. But it’s only happened a couple times, and considering I’m streaming movies over WiFi with it, I’m surprised it isn’t doing it more.

I purchased two of these external hard drives for the new iMac I use at work. One is for the Time Machine backup and the other is a backup used for off-site storage. Setup was quick and easy (they arrived formatted for the Mac), and the size is great for a 3 TB drive – not too big to take my off-site backup home. I’ve only been using them for a short time, but I’ve always had good experience with Western Digital drives, so I expect many years of trouble-free service.

I love the stylishness of this (3TB) WD External Hard Drive. I’ve had it for a month and it perfectly complements the look of my CinemaDisplay and MacBook Pro.I had experienced this hard drive disconnecting itself randomly after the MacBook Pro wakes from sleep, but it’s only happened once so far, and I put my MBP to sleep usually only once daily. I’m hoping that either WD or Apple, whoever is responsible for the issue, will eventually issue an update to fix this.I ran the included tests that WD provides before I put a single bit of data on it and everything checked out, and so far it’s running perfectly. I’ll come back and update this review though if I ever encounter issues.

I only use these drives with Macintosh systems; one was a replacement for two Lacie Quadra drives which failed after 2-3 years use. As a precaution I reformat these drives to a known state using the Disk Utility software.I’ve used these Western Digital (WD) for several years without any failures. Two 4TB drives are used for general file storage and backups while another 6TB drive for video file storage. The drives also work flawlessly with Time Machine. The USB 3.0 interface is relatively fast, but backup times vary depending on the nature of the files being copied. For example, copy time for 100 GB took approximately 20 minutes. I’ve also noticed some increases in copy time when considerable file fragmentation is present on the receiving drive. Deletion of obsolete files and periodic file consolidation is done to address the slow performance induced by space fragmentation. Utility software (e.g., Tech Tool Pro) can be used periodically to “de-frag” a drive. The drives have their own external power supply and the provided USB cables are connected directly to the computer for the fastest response time. I also use an Amazon Basics 4-port USB 3.0 powered hub for connecting multiple drives, flash drives, and digital cameras to the Macs, but file transit times through the hub substantially increase total copy time.I expect to upgrade to higher capacity drives as storage needs increase and drive prices decrease. Fortunately, Western Digital provides an upgrade pathway to these larger capacity single drives, e.g., the 8TB, and some RAID dual drives which scale upward up to 16TB.I’ve beed satisfied with the handsome design of the drives, relatively high storage capacities, USB 3.0 performance, and reliability.

This external drive comes at a premium cost, but lives up to the expectations that come with the price tag. The drive seems very durable, stable and is cool to the touch even during heavy use. It is definitly designed with the Apple/Mac user in mind and is formatted and packaged with security software that make it easy to plug and play with an Apple device. I was set up with Time Machine in minutes. Also, USB 3.0 support means that when I upgrade my computer, file transfers will be even faster. If you are looking for a USB 3.0 3TB drive there are a few other options that cost a little less, but this drive seems to me, worth the extra few dollars I paid.

I purchased through Amazon.com and had the option of 1,2,3, or 4TB capacity. I purchased the 2TB model for my needs and this particular model based on the high user ratings and the fact it was USB 3.0 vs 2.0. Maybe not as fast as the newer Thunderbolt drive but VERY fast and much cheaper than the Thunderbolt drives. The exterior finish matches my new 2012-13 iMac 27 perfectly and runs so quiet, I have to look at the light on the unit to see if it is powered. The unit came with a power adapter (wall wart type) and the USB cord and setup took only a few minutes. After years of being a PC user I am new to Apple and for being a newbie, this unit could not be more simple to hook up to the iMac. The iMac immediately recognized the hard drive and setup of Apple Time Machine backup program was so easy on this drive and immediately backed up the IMac within a few minutes! This is no dog on speed. I would be surprised if the more expensive Thunderbold drive could be much faster, and this unit is silent! It looks beautiful next to the iMac too. Only time will tell if this drive will hold up but unless this unit fails prematurely, I could not be more happy with this drive.

Good product! I already feel better using it, rather than my Seagate Backup Plus portable HD (one already died on me, so I got a replacement under warranty, but they sent me a refurbished one), this one already makes my iMac function faster… My only issue is WD’s website, they have some issues there, for whatever reason I couldn’t finish my registration process, neither using Safari nor Chrome… Their customer support was quick to respond and very supportive, but still, lingering issues with their website. Also, something that I was never confronted with before, getting an email from their system (it did get my email address, but still wouldn’t let me fully register, placing my password), it shows my (supposed to be 3-year) warranty expiring in November 2014, which is like 2 months before I even purchased the product… The guy on the phone was asking me to email them a scan of my receipt, but since it doesn’t show the S/N I had to take a picture of the label on the box and email to them both, the receipt and the picture…Oh. well, life is not perfect.

  10. Donna McMaster

I bought this drive in March, 2013, almost 2 years ago. It has been my Time Machine disk, and has gotten regular use. I’m currently using 3.5TB out of the 4TB capacity. I have had no trouble with it at all. It is quiet, unobtrusive, and bulletproof. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it. I am currently shopping for an additional drive, and the only question is which WD drive to chose.
